Previous portrait example by Sam Gilbey
Hand-rendered realistic digital paintings.
His work has gained a following of people who are inspired by his depictions of the people and characters that they love. He can often be seen presenting prints of his work to the actors and directors of the films that provide the source material for his illustrations..
Pop culture has been a long-term inspiration to Sam Gilbey. This ongoing passion has led him to develop an individual style that reflects the iconic people, characters, and franchises that have become so beloved. Each facial detail is diligently rendered by hand in his realistic digital paintings.
Film, TV, and comics are a few of the many places that have featured Sam’s work with clients such as Aardman and Picturehouse Cinemas. Other clients include Playstation, Twitter, Vertigo Films, Virgin, Wired, and Working Title.
Sam Gilbey’s creative style stems directly from the acrylic painting techniques he was using in his teens and early twenties. Moving on to using a Wacom pen and tablet has allowed him the efficiency of speed and flexibility, although he does occasionally return to the canvas when he can.
Sam usually begins his work in Photoshop, planning out his images with loose sketches that become a faint guide. Layers are then slowly built up one by one as you would when working with paint on canvas. While the majority of his painting is done in Painter, he returns to Photoshop to composite the final sections and add effects when needed.
While his style using reference, Sam is focused on capturing the likeness in his portraits, without being interested in them being necessarily photorealistic. The individual marks that shine through and show the craftsmanship behind them are part of the final aesthetic that he finds satisfying.
