Previous portrait example by Studio Nippoldt
Powerful linear drawings from an award-winning book illustrator.
Strong, confident marks outline the faces in Studio Nippoldt’s portraits. Working in the great tradition of black and white linear drawings, this technique brings attention to the high level of skilled drawing and understanding of facial characteristics and expression of emotion.
Robert Nippoldt is a German illustrator and book designer, and head of the studio that includes his companion Christine Goppel and his sister Astrid. He specialises in book illustration, his breakthrough trilogy on America in the ‘20s and ‘30s having been received by critical acclaim and winning many awards. He has continued to work with international publishers like Taschen since.
As someone who describes himself as a social person, getting an idea of the type of character and personality his subject has is very important to Robert Nipoldt.
Robert’s process always starts by gathering as much information on a person as possible. This can be in the form of text, photos or video footage. Reading about a person and what they are like is just as valuable as visual references for the portraits he creates.
Once he has a good idea of where he is going, he begins with loose preliminary sketches in pencil. He then sits down to do the core ink drawings, before making small adjustments on the computer using a digital pen and tablet.
